Average home deadlocks have one cylinder and, thus, one keyhole on the exterior side and a knob or lever on the internal side. There is a latch assembly, the bolt that comes out from the edge of the door, plates, the strike plate at the doorframe and small components of the mechanism including the pins and springs. So, the main thing is to identify the problem with any of these parts in order to find the right solution.

One of the most common problems is related to the misalignment of the bolt with the strike plate. If the problem is major, you won't be able to even close the door. It's crucial for you to remember that the bolt of the security lock must be inserted all the way in the strike plate. Repairs might range from aligning the bolt with the strike plate to aligning the door. Sometimes, the problem starts with the door. If it sags, you will need to tighten and adjust the hinges. If the problem is the bolt, make sure the strike plate is in place. Check the screws and make sure they are tightened. In a different case, the lock mechanism must be checked or even replaced.

In some cases, the internal parts of the lock are broken. They must be replaced and this means that you will have to remove the mechanism and find the broken components. You must unscrew the door knob in order to remove the mechanism. The cylinder is also secured and you must remove its screws, too. You will have to follow the same steps if the key turns in the lock. This is usually the sign of loose cylinders. If the cylinder is in good condition, you will just have to tighten the screws. In a different case, it must be replaced.

Other problems are related to the weather. When it is cold, locks might freeze. In this case, you can use a blow dryer to warm them up or you won't be able to insert the key. If you have a problem inserting the key, chances are that there is something wrong with the key or the lock is stiff due to over accumulated dirt. The mechanism can be cleaned but you will have to remove it again and use a toothbrush to remove debris. When door locks are well lubricated, they work better. So, don't forget to keep them lubricated.
